Today, I did a little preparation for the second phase of my beaded Beatles Yellow Submarine. I looked in my bead stash, and realized that I only had one small bag of size 11 chartreuse seed beads. That's not nearly enough to bead four smiling whales. So, this afternoon, I did a little bead shopping. In addition to Opaque Chartreuse, I also picked up some Matte Silver-Lined Chartreuse, Opaque Green, and Matte Transparent Yellow.
When I returned home, I began to create some felt whale shapes. I did this first by re-sizing my sketches and printing them out (see photo below). Each one varies in size from 4.5" to 6.5" wide. After I cut out each whale, I traced around them on a piece of felt with a fabric pen. Then, very carefully, I cut each one out. After doing that, I realized that I can't start doing beadwork until the whales' teeth are in place.
So, on each paper whale, I partially cut out each set of teeth. Then, I traced the shape of the whale's teeth onto the back of a piece of white vinyl. Then, I drew in some jaws and cut them out. I also numbered the backs of each paper, felt, and vinyl shape so that I know which jaws go with which whale. Here's what the vinyl teeth look like so far:
Hmmm... that's funny. I hadn't realized that the teeth I cut out were sharp and pointy... I wonder if they're killer whales... :0

Well if they're Killer Whales then I take back what I said about wanting to pet them. LOL ;-)

But, they let folks pet Shamu at Sea World! :D
The orca pods up here near Seattle are supposed to be very friendly. We're just not allowed near them.
I've got bead embroidery on my list of things to try. I should probably do it sooner than later, since I've done thread embroidery since I was 5. But I'm addicted to off loom weaving at the moment. Too many techniques, too little time!
The vials with beads look interesting - so many shades of green. And the rows of teeth are real artwork.

I guess that they are killer whales if that's what you want them to be.......They are so fun!!!
I watched a TV program on sperm whales this morning that included a segment of Orca attacking the new born calf of one of the sperm whales. It seems that me male sperm whale has teeth, too, and is much bigger than the Orca. Sooooooooo… your whales can be of more than one kind.
